SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk: "Step This Way" Interactive Performance
DESCRIPTION:“Step This Way” is a site-specific performance featuring live music and dance by Mark Gabriel Little and Maura García. The performance takes place on and around the pARC\, an interactive playful installation designed and created by The Urban Conga on the Ackland’s Terrace. Throughout the performance\, elements of the composition and choreography will shift based on a predetermined pattern and depending on how audience members interact with the space. The performance will loop and restart throughout the evening\, with new sets beginning at 7 p.m.\, 7:30 p.m.\, 8 p.m.\, and 8:30 p.m. \n“Step This Way” transforms the seemingly unrelated elements of the Museum and the surrounding areas into a unifying performance experience\, with music and choreography that change as the environment and the people within it change throughout the duration of the piece. “Step This Way” celebrates place\, the arts\, and the capacity that we have to listen to\, relate to\, and beautifully respond to one another. \nFree and open to the public. No tickets needed. \n“Step This Way” is supported by a Grassroots grant from the Orange County Arts Commission and a gift from Allen Anderson and Tama Hochbaum. Technical support has been given by PlayMakers Repertory Company. The program is presented as part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro 2nd Friday ArtWalk. \n— \nUNC-Chapel Hill Students can receive CLE credit for attending this performance. SUMMARY:Music in the Galleries: Music of the Chevalier de Saint-Georges
DESCRIPTION:This event is now SOLD OUT. To be added to a waitlist\, please email acklandRSVP@unc.edu. \nJoin members of the UNC Baroque Ensemble\, under the direction of Brent Wissick\, for an intimate art-inspired concert of French classical music by Joseph Boulogne\, also known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges. A tour for concert-goers led by Dana Cowen\, exhibition curator and Sheldon Peck Curator for European and American Art before 1950\, will follow the performance. \nThis event is now SOLD OUT. To be added to a waitlist\, please email acklandRSVP@unc.edu. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nReform to Restoration: French Drawings from Louis XVI to Louis XVIII (1770-1830) presents over eighty master drawings from The Horvitz Collection\, the preeminent private collection of French art in the United States\, and showcases some of the most well-known artists of the period\, including Jacques-Louis David\, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres\, and Pierre-Paul Prud’hon. Working in a time of tremendous political and social upheaval in France\, artists looked to the art\, architecture\, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration and used stories from antique history and mythology as well as current events and contemporary theater to convey moral and civic values during a period of great uncertainty. Arranged in thematic groupings devoted to the concepts of patriotism\, love\, honor\, conflict\, and despair\, the works on display demonstrate the intellectual curiosity of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French artists as well as the expressive versatility and powerful immediacy of drawings. \nImage credit: Jean-Jacques-François Le Barbier\, called Le Barbier L’AÎNÉ (1738-1826)\, Minerva Presenting the the Chevalier Desilles to Henri IV in the Elysian Fields\, ND\, Pen with black ink and brush with brown wash on off-white laid paper\, 240 x 355 mm. SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk: Sunsets Dance Party with WXYC
DESCRIPTION:Sunsets Dance Party with WXYC \nA global dance party inspired by Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution)\, the seven-channel video installation by Ghost of a Dream featuring sunsets captured around the world by artists living through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the April 2nd Friday ArtWalk\, all are invited to dance together as WXYC DJs spin tunes as the sun sets on Arts Everywhere Day. \nAligned by the Sun (through the revolution) is a seven-channel video installation created specifically for the Ackland Art Museum that uses the formal positioning of the horizon line to connect each video of the sun. By overlaying images of a setting sun that align vastly different and often non-neighboring locations\, Ghost of a Dream’s Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution) offers entry points to important conversations around equality\, location\, migration\, and the environment. On view through July 3\, 2022. \n— \nThe Ackland Art Museum is operating under the guidelines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As of March 7\, 2022\, masks are optional in our galleries.

The group participates in cultural showcases across the state with the aim of introducing and educating surrounding communities on the beauty of traditional Chinese dance culture. \nCollection Connections: \nDish\, Unidentified Chinese Artist\, 1426-1435 \nVase\, Thomas Bezanson\, 1959-69 \nThe ox harkens imagery of strength and steadfastness\, but it also lends its likeness to the richly colored red of the two glazed ceramics featured above. ‘Sang de bouef’ glaze\, or oxblood\, gained prevalence in the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is characterized by its monochrome red. The striking coloring of ‘sang de bouef’ is achieved using copper oxide\, whose chemical composition allows for the pottery to mimic the depth of its namesake animal’s blood. \nThe Ackland holds both an original dish from an unidentified Chinese artist of the 15th century  and a mid-20th century vase from Canadian artist Thomas Bezanson in its collection\, both of which utilize the sang de bouef glaze. \nTo learn more about the history of ‘sang de bouef\,’ we encourage you to explore these resources: \n‘Sang de Bouef’ Vase\, The Cleveland Museum of Art \nVase\, called “The Flame”\, National Gallery of Art \nMetal Ox Origami Activity\nD.I.Y.
