SUMMARY:AWAY FOR THE DAY: Tour at the Nasher Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making\, 1948 – 1960 is the first major museum exhibition to investigate the early work of one of the most celebrated American artists of the 20th century. The exhibition tells the overlooked story of Lichtenstein’s early career and establishes a deeper understanding of postwar American art. The landmark exhibition features loans from museums and private collections\, presenting about 90 works from the artist’s fruitful formative years. Many of the paintings\, drawings\, sculptures\, and prints will be on public view for the first time. \nThe exhibition will also tell the story of Lichtenstein’s brief but instrumental flirtation with abstraction in 1959 and 1960. Coinciding with the mainstreaming of Abstract Expressionism\, these paintings illustrate how the artist was inspired to engage with the movement’s pervasive influence\, but not without inserting his characteristic humor and wit. \nJoin us on December 1 and take a docent-led tour of the exhibition. \n$10 for Ackland members\, $12 for non-members

SUMMARY:Away for the Day: Docent-Led NCMA Tour
DESCRIPTION:Docent-Led Tour of NCMA’s Reinstalled People’s Collection\nWednesday\, October 26 | 10:30 a.m. \nThis October\, the North Carolina Museum of Art will complete an ambitious reinstallation of its collection\, featuring the presentation of five new galleries\, exploring portraiture and power\, Egypt and Africa\, the Americas\, the art of conservation\, and a gallery connecting visual and performing arts. The Ackland has lent eleven works to the first year of this re-installation\, ranging from an ancient Nubian tulip beaker of around 1600 BCE and a 4th century BCE Greek coin to a Tiffany Lily Lamp and an iconic contemporary sculpture by Renee Stout. \nThe refreshed collection will include new interactive learning experiences\, including digital games and labels. The interactive station\, Beyond White: Marble Sculpture and Color\, will focus on the Roman Fragment of a Sarcophagus with Ram from the third century. Through research and conservation\, Museum staff learned this object had color when created thousands of years ago. Visitors will be able to explore these pigments and see a digital version of what the object would have looked like when new and colorful. There will be a map projection in The Africa We Ought to Know Gallery to encourage learning about the empires in Africa\, paired with voice narration\, to give a deeper understanding of the trade routes on the continent. A map in the Dutch collection will highlight the history of the 80 Years War. \nJoin us on October 26 to see this new space during a docent-led tour. \nPurchase tickets below!\n$10 Ackland Members | $12 Non-Members \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Away for the Day: Mucha at NCMA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a docent led tour of “Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Visionary” at the North Carolina Musuem of Art. \nCzech-born Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was one of the most celebrated artists in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. As an influential force behind the art nouveau movement\, he created sumptuous posters and advertising—promoting such everyday products as cigarette papers and tea biscuits—that transformed the streets of Paris into open-air art exhibitions. Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Visionary celebrates the Mucha Trust Collection’s first major U.S. tour in 20 years\, featuring a vast array of posters\, illustrations\, ornamental objects\, and rarely seen sculpture\, photographs\, and self-portraits. Additional works from the NCMA’s collection highlight the American interpretation of the European aesthetics that influenced Mucha as well as his close friendship with French sculptor Auguste Rodin. \nLearn more about NCMA here.
