SUMMARY:Reimagining the Black and Queer Body: A Conversation with Photographer Mikael Owunna
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, 11/8/19 | 7:00 – 9:00 PM \n\n\n\nReimagining the Black and Queer Body: A Conversation with Photographer Mikael Owunna \nFree\, RSVP requested. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nGrowing up as a queer African person\, photographer\, Mikael Owunna was told that it was “un-African” to be gay\, and that homosexuality was foreign to his culture. After enduring years of severe alienation from his Nigerian heritage and a series of exorcisms\, he found photography as his voice and his method for healing\, leading him to where he is today. \nHis most recent project\, Limit(less)\, seeks to reclaim his African-ness and queerness on his own terms. Limit(less) is an award-winning documentary photography project on LGBTQ African immigrants in North America and Europe. Framing the work as a quest to debunk the myth that it is “un-African” to be LGBTQ\, in the process Owunna found that there are no safe spaces anywhere for LGBTQ Africans – even in the “liberal” West. As Owunna states\, “This body of work is a collaborative response between me and my community to redefine what it means to be an immigrant\, African and queer in North America and Europe at this time. To confront\, with our self-love and stories\, the oppressive narratives that say we should not exist. We are Limitless.” \nOwunna’s work extends to the love and acceptance of one’s body. His other projects\, especially Infinite Essence in which he paints the models with fluorescent paints\, illuminate the black body as not ‘dead or dying/gunned down’ but as something beautiful and eternal—to be loved and embraced by its owner. Owunna’s work coaches self-love\, dignity\, and self-respect\, despite sexuality\, color\, or nationality. \nThe event organizer is Amanda Maples\, Curator of African Art at the NCMA and Visiting Professor in the Department of Art & Art History. She will be introducing Mikael Owunna and leading the conversation. \nThe Provost’s Committee on LGBTQ Life\, the African Studies Center\, the Student Affairs LGBTQ Center\, and Arts Everywhere invite the UNC community to join LGBTQ photographer Mikael Owunna at the Ackland Art Museum as he discusses his personal experiences of growing up queer in Nigeria\, and how this has informed his subsequent global artistic practice. \nRSVP Here: \nOops! We could not locate your form. \n\nMikael Chukwuma Owunna\nMikael Chukwuma Owunna (b. 1990) is an award-winning queer Nigerian-Swedish artist\, photographer\, Fulbright Scholar and engineer born and raised in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. Mikael has dual degrees in Biomedical Engineering and History (Duke University ’12)\, where he graduated with distinction in engineering and a full merit scholarship. Mikael’s Fulbright scholarship took place in Taiwan (2012-13) where he taught photography to Taiwanese aboriginal youth as a space for cultural empowerment with Prof. Christine Yeh of USF\, ultimately culminating in a full floor exhibition of the students’ works at the National Taiwan Museum (2014). \nMikael’s work centers around identity while bending the photograph with his engineering and multidisciplinary background. His projects: I am Atayal!\, Limit(less) and Infinite Essence – have collectively exhibited across Asia\, Europe and North America and been featured in media ranging from the New York Times\, CNN\, NPR\, PBS\, The British Journal of Photography\, BuzzFeed\, VICE\, Al-Jazeera Plus\, Photo District News and Teen Vogue to the official outlet of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture. Mikael has been awarded with selections for Photolucida’s Critical Mass Top 50\, the FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo (finalist)\, the New York Times Portfolio Review\, the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward Awards and juried selection for Review Santa Fe. He has spoken and lectured about his work at venues including World Press Photo (Netherlands)\, Harvard Law School\, Columbia Law School\, Duke University\, the Paris Institute of Political Studies (France) and Sveriges Radio (Sweden). Mikael speaks English (fluent)\, French (advanced professional-proficiency) and basic Mandarin Chinese. His work imagines new universes and realities for marginalized communities around the globe. \nMikael’s work has been supported by The Heinz Endowments\, The Pittsburgh Foundation\, The Fine Foundation\, The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and The Opportunity Fund. \n\n\n2nd Friday ArtWalk at the Ackland\nEvery second Friday of the month\, the Ackland participates as a venue in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro 2nd Friday ArtWalk\, staying open until 9:00 PM and offering a variety of interactive\, all-ages activities in addition to all exhibitions being open to visitors. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay
DESCRIPTION:This event has now passed. Watch a recording of the talk below! \nJoin us for a conversation between artist Shanequa Gay and Lauren Turner\, the Ackland’s assistant curator for the collection. They will discuss Gay’s commissioned installation holding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor\, which is now on view in the Ackland’s ART& gallery. \nholding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor is a site-specific installation that features monumental chimeric figures rendered in oil and acrylic. Gay merges Breonna Taylor’s likeness with deer and zebra features in a technique of juxtaposition that she employs throughout her artmaking practice. The resulting hybrid guardians incorporate multiple characteristics of the natural world to facilitate healing and empowerment. An altar-like display of vintage Tiara black glassware and salt water transforms the gallery into a space for collective mourning while the monochromatic installation starkly reminds viewers that Taylor’s death resulted from forces that shape the lives of countless Black Americans. \nShanequa Gay\, an Atlanta native\, has exhibited at the Zuckerman Museum (Kennesaw\, GA)\, the Hammonds House Museum (Atlanta\, GA)\, the Hayti Heritage Center (Durham\, NC)\, the McColl Center for Art + Innovation (Charlotte\, NC)\, and the Chattanooga African American Museum (Chattanooga\, TN). For more information about her work\, please go to www.shanequagay.com. \nThis installation and related programming have been made possible by the generous support of James Keith Brown and Eric Diefenbach.\n\nRecording of our “Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay” held Friday\, Nov 13\, 2020. SUMMARY:Artist Conversation: Creating "Mysterious Ink World\, Part One (2016)"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, April 9 for an in-depth look at Mysterious Ink World\, Part One (2016)\, a collaborative contemporary work featured in the Ackland Art Museum’s newest installation of Asian art\, Clouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art. The immersive work is composed of an abstract ink painting by Ming Ren (American\, b. 1956) installed opposite an interactive projection responding in real time to the viewers of the painting\, designed by computer scientist and artificial intelligence pioneer Hansong Zhang (Chinese\, b. 1969)\, who received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. Both Ming Ren and Hansong Zhang will join us for a conversation about how the work came together and the nature of their artistic collaboration. Ellen Huang\, former curator for Asian art\, will moderate the conversation and help situate the work within the larger themes of Clouding. \nThe virtual program is free and open to the public. Free tickets must be obtained below to receive the Zoom link. Interested visitors may wish to see Clouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art in person in the Ackland’s recently reopened galleries by obtaining a timed ticket. \nThe program is presented in connection with UNC’s Arts Everywhere Day 2021. \nClouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art (on view January 20\, 2021 – February 13\, 2022) has been organized by Ellen Huang\, former curator for Asian art\, with Peter Nisbet\, deputy director for curatorial affairs. It has been made possible in part by the Ackland’s Ruth and Sherman Lee Fund for Asian Art\, Linda and Philip Carl\, Smith Freeman and Austin Scarlett\, and Mina Levin and Ronald Schwarz.

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk: Sunsets Dance Party with WXYC
DESCRIPTION:Sunsets Dance Party with WXYC \nA global dance party inspired by Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution)\, the seven-channel video installation by Ghost of a Dream featuring sunsets captured around the world by artists living through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the April 2nd Friday ArtWalk\, all are invited to dance together as WXYC DJs spin tunes as the sun sets on Arts Everywhere Day. \nAligned by the Sun (through the revolution) is a seven-channel video installation created specifically for the Ackland Art Museum that uses the formal positioning of the horizon line to connect each video of the sun. By overlaying images of a setting sun that align vastly different and often non-neighboring locations\, Ghost of a Dream’s Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution) offers entry points to important conversations around equality\, location\, migration\, and the environment. On view through July 3\, 2022. \n— \nThe Ackland Art Museum is operating under the guidelines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As of March 7\, 2022\, masks are optional in our galleries.

SUMMARY:"Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing" by Lee Weisert
DESCRIPTION:Experience a three day sound installation by composer and UNC composition professor Lee Weisert. Weisert’s Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will be on view in the Ackland’s ART& space February 10-12\, 2023 in connection with Good Object / Bad Object. In this new exhibition\, the Ackland examines how contemporary sculpture might employ unexpected placement\, language\, reflectivity\, accumulation\, and other strategies to subvert our understanding of how “good objects” might “behave badly.” Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will likewise challenge the observer to question exactly how sculptures are “supposed to behave” in a museum setting. \nA large suspended sphere of slowly melting ice drips into a metal receptacle. A contact microphone mounted to the bottom of the receptacle tracks the rhythms of the falling drops\, triggering a computer-controlled speech sampler. Speech fragments from the Book of Genesis (The Flood) are played in order\, on a loop. Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing was premiered at the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro\, NC\, and was on long term view at Western Carolina University in 2014. \nLee Weisert is a composer of instrumental and electronic music and an associate professor in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, where he teaches courses in composition\, electronic music\, and musicianship. He has degrees in music composition from the University of Colorado\, California Institute of the Arts\, and Northwestern University. Weisert’s recent music has incorporated increasingly disparate elements such as orchestral instruments\, found sounds\, field recordings\, digital synthesis\, and analog circuitry\, in an attempt to find\, “through experimentation\, tinkering\, and unconventional approaches\, a ritualistic and deeply expressive world of sound” (Dan Lippel\, New Focus Recordings). His instrumental music has been commissioned and performed by nationally recognized performers and ensembles including Stephen Drury\, the Callithumpian Consort\, ICE\, JACK Quartet\, Spektral Quartet\, Yarn/Wire\, Wild Rumpus\, Matthew McClure\, Clara Yang\, and Joann Cho.
