SUMMARY:Artist Conversation: Creating "Mysterious Ink World\, Part One (2016)"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, April 9 for an in-depth look at Mysterious Ink World\, Part One (2016)\, a collaborative contemporary work featured in the Ackland Art Museum’s newest installation of Asian art\, Clouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art. The immersive work is composed of an abstract ink painting by Ming Ren (American\, b. 1956) installed opposite an interactive projection responding in real time to the viewers of the painting\, designed by computer scientist and artificial intelligence pioneer Hansong Zhang (Chinese\, b. 1969)\, who received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. Both Ming Ren and Hansong Zhang will join us for a conversation about how the work came together and the nature of their artistic collaboration. Ellen Huang\, former curator for Asian art\, will moderate the conversation and help situate the work within the larger themes of Clouding. \nThe virtual program is free and open to the public. Free tickets must be obtained below to receive the Zoom link. Interested visitors may wish to see Clouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art in person in the Ackland’s recently reopened galleries by obtaining a timed ticket. \nThe program is presented in connection with UNC’s Arts Everywhere Day 2021.  \nClouding: Shape and Sign in Asian Art (on view January 20\, 2021 – February 13\, 2022) has been organized by Ellen Huang\, former curator for Asian art\, with Peter Nisbet\, deputy director for curatorial affairs. Smith will be demonstrating various metalworking techniques featured in both Peace\, Power & Prestige and in her work in sterling\, fine silver\, and gold wearable art and small sculpture\, which has been influenced by her recent study with a Senegalese master goldsmith. Smith recently relocated to Durham from Oakland\, CA\, and will be starting a Triangle-based chapter of We Wield The Hammer.

DESCRIPTION:Sunsets Dance Party with WXYC \nA global dance party inspired by Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution)\, the seven-channel video installation by Ghost of a Dream featuring sunsets captured around the world by artists living through the COVID-19 pandemic. During the April 2nd Friday ArtWalk\, all are invited to dance together as WXYC DJs spin tunes as the sun sets on Arts Everywhere Day. \nAligned by the Sun (through the revolution) is a seven-channel video installation created specifically for the Ackland Art Museum that uses the formal positioning of the horizon line to connect each video of the sun. By overlaying images of a setting sun that align vastly different and often non-neighboring locations\, Ghost of a Dream’s Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution) offers entry points to important conversations around equality\, location\, migration\, and the environment. On view through July 3\, 2022. \n— \nThe Ackland Art Museum is operating under the guidelines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As of March 7\, 2022\, masks are optional in our galleries.

DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Printmaking Workshop with Raj Bunnag \n6-7:30 p.m.  \n \nJoin Raj Bunnag\, 2022 MFA candidate whose work is featured in Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022\, for a special hands-on printmaking workshop during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk!  \n  \nIn this drop-in workshop\, visitors will be able to make their own tiny stamps using hand-carved blocks made by Bunnag. Watch as Bunnag demonstrates his printmaking techniques and create your own small prints to take home. This workshop will take place outdoors and attendees are welcome to stay for as long as they like during the hour and a half-long program.   \n \nMaterials for this event have been generously donated by Speedball. Presented in connection with Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022. Part of the Chapel-Hill Carrboro 2nd Friday ArtWalk. \n— \nRaj Bunnag is a Thai American artist living and working in Durham\, North Carolina. He received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012 with an emphasis in Printmaking. He is currently an MFA candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bunnag’s practice examines systematic racism inherent to the foundations of the US\, its institutions\, and its domestic/global policies\, through themes in the lineage of print. In his more personal work\, he is researching the ideas and baggage that come with self-identity as the son of immigrants and what it means to be a non-white body existing in white spaces. He has shown work nationally and internationally as well as received numerous awards for his relief printed work.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Acktoberfest\,” an evening of art-inspired beer and cheese pairings\, plus exhibition tours and still-life drawing stations\, all in celebration of our current exhibition Drawn to Life: Master Drawings from the Age of Rembrandt in the Peck Collection at the Ackland Art Museum.  \nTasting boards designed by The Cheese Shop (Carrboro\, NC) will feature a selection of cheeses with connections to the drawings on view. Both boards and a la carte cheeses to take home will be available for purchase.  \nLocal craft beers that pair well with the cheeses (and art!) will be available from Craftboro Brewing (Carrboro\, NC) at a cash bar\, with additional non-alcoholic offerings for sale. \nExhibition curator Dana Cowen will lead mini-tours of Drawn to Life throughout the evening\, with a special look at the works that have been paired with the cheeses and beers. \nAt a still-life drawing station designed by University Florist (Chapel Hill\, NC)\, try your hand at sketching from a gorgeous seasonal arrangement. \nThe admission is free. SUMMARY:"Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing" by Lee Weisert
DESCRIPTION:Experience a three day sound installation by composer and UNC composition professor Lee Weisert. Weisert’s Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will be on view in the Ackland’s ART& space February 10-12\, 2023 in connection with Good Object / Bad Object. In this new exhibition\, the Ackland examines how contemporary sculpture might employ unexpected placement\, language\, reflectivity\, accumulation\, and other strategies to subvert our understanding of how “good objects” might “behave badly.” Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will likewise challenge the observer to question exactly how sculptures are “supposed to behave” in a museum setting. \nA large suspended sphere of slowly melting ice drips into a metal receptacle. A contact microphone mounted to the bottom of the receptacle tracks the rhythms of the falling drops\, triggering a computer-controlled speech sampler. Speech fragments from the Book of Genesis (The Flood) are played in order\, on a loop. Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing was premiered at the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro\, NC\, and was on long term view at Western Carolina University in 2014. \nLee Weisert is a composer of instrumental and electronic music and an associate professor in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, where he teaches courses in composition\, electronic music\, and musicianship. He has degrees in music composition from the University of Colorado\, California Institute of the Arts\, and Northwestern University. Weisert’s recent music has incorporated increasingly disparate elements such as orchestral instruments\, found sounds\, field recordings\, digital synthesis\, and analog circuitry\, in an attempt to find\, “through experimentation\, tinkering\, and unconventional approaches\, a ritualistic and deeply expressive world of sound” (Dan Lippel\, New Focus Recordings). His instrumental music has been commissioned and performed by nationally recognized performers and ensembles including Stephen Drury\, the Callithumpian Consort\, ICE\, JACK Quartet\, Spektral Quartet\, Yarn/Wire\, Wild Rumpus\, Matthew McClure\, Clara Yang\, and Joann Cho.

DESCRIPTION:Experience a three day sound installation by composer and UNC composition professor Lee Weisert. Weisert’s Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will be on view in the Ackland’s ART& space February 10-12\, 2023 in connection with Good Object / Bad Object. In this new exhibition\, the Ackland examines how contemporary sculpture might employ unexpected placement\, language\, reflectivity\, accumulation\, and other strategies to subvert our understanding of how “good objects” might “behave badly.” Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing will likewise challenge the observer to question exactly how sculptures are “supposed to behave” in a museum setting. \nA large suspended sphere of slowly melting ice drips into a metal receptacle. A contact microphone mounted to the bottom of the receptacle tracks the rhythms of the falling drops\, triggering a computer-controlled speech sampler. Speech fragments from the Book of Genesis (The Flood) are played in order\, on a loop. Both Man and Beast and the Creeping Thing was premiered at the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro\, NC\, and was on long term view at Western Carolina University in 2014. \nLee Weisert is a composer of instrumental and electronic music and an associate professor in the Music Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, where he teaches courses in composition\, electronic music\, and musicianship. He has degrees in music composition from the University of Colorado\, California Institute of the Arts\, and Northwestern University. Weisert’s recent music has incorporated increasingly disparate elements such as orchestral instruments\, found sounds\, field recordings\, digital synthesis\, and analog circuitry\, in an attempt to find\, “through experimentation\, tinkering\, and unconventional approaches\, a ritualistic and deeply expressive world of sound” (Dan Lippel\, New Focus Recordings). His instrumental music has been commissioned and performed by nationally recognized performers and ensembles including Stephen Drury\, the Callithumpian Consort\, ICE\, JACK Quartet\, Spektral Quartet\, Yarn/Wire\, Wild Rumpus\, Matthew McClure\, Clara Yang\, and Joann Cho.

DESCRIPTION:“Step This Way” is a site-specific performance featuring live music and dance by Mark Gabriel Little and Maura García. The performance takes place on and around the pARC\, an interactive playful installation designed and created by The Urban Conga on the Ackland’s Terrace. Throughout the performance\, elements of the composition and choreography will shift based on a predetermined pattern and depending on how audience members interact with the space. The performance will loop and restart throughout the evening\, with new sets beginning at 7 p.m.\, 7:30 p.m.\, 8 p.m.\, and 8:30 p.m. \n“Step This Way” transforms the seemingly unrelated elements of the Museum and the surrounding areas into a unifying performance experience\, with music and choreography that change as the environment and the people within it change throughout the duration of the piece. “Step This Way” celebrates place\, the arts\, and the capacity that we have to listen to\, relate to\, and beautifully respond to one another. \nFree and open to the public. No tickets needed. \n“Step This Way” is supported by a Grassroots grant from the Orange County Arts Commission and a gift from Allen Anderson and Tama Hochbaum. At the root of all of her endeavors is the desire to heal and create more space for joy in the world. \nAs an artistic director\, Maura collaborates with Indigenous and POC artists to realize multi-media performances\, interactive dance experiences and community arts projects. Her narrative driven work uncovers stories hidden by colonialism and reflects the power they have to change our realities. As a human and as a creator\, Maura works to uplift Indigenous cultural values\, perpetuate ancestral knowledge and actively respect the living earth.  \nMaura is an international touring artist and shares her work with the world via specially-designed commissions\, repertoire performances\, multi-day residencies and longer-term community programs. Her performances have been presented throughout North America. Learn more on her website. \nMark Gabriel Little is a composer\, singer\, and musician based in Chapel Hill\, NC. His work builds on a deep foundation in Negro musical traditions and incorporates elements from many other musical traditions including Indigenous southeastern woodlands of North America\, Caribbean\, West Africa\, Classical European\, and East Asia. Throughout his career\, he has balanced producing boundary-breaking compositions with live performances as a solo act\, in a band\, or accompanying other performing artists. Commissions include a choral piece for the Maura Garcia Dance Company (Charleston\, South Carolina) and an experimental symphony\, “Fracking Music!” for the Ackland Art Museum (Chapel Hill\, North Carolina). In his collaborations\, MGL bridges visual and performing arts with an unconventional sound and music vocabulary. SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk: Sustainable Strut
DESCRIPTION:The UNC Undergraduate Student Government’s Department of Environmental Affairs is bringing the Sustainable Strut to the Ackland Art Museum this year! \nThe Sustainable Strut is a student-based fashion show that showcases clothing that has been cultivated sustainably and ethically. The show will feature a large group of student fashion organizations and designers. The mission is to bring awareness to the environmental degradation that textile pollution brings about by means of a diverse and inclusive fashion show. \nBringing together students of different perspectives and backgrounds\, the Sustainable Strut was first launched in March 2023 and served as an epicenter of creativity and community. Student Government is pleased to be revamping the show this year and bringing it to life in the Ackland’s galleries during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk. \nTICKETS \nThere will be two show times for the Sustainable Strut: 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Please reserve your ticket for the specific show time. Seating will begin 30 minutes before each show time and close 10 minutes before the start of the show. Seats that remain unfilled 10 minutes before the show risk being released to stand-by guests.

Curator Jami Powell (Osage) will join the artists for a moderated conversation around themes of intergenerational knowledge transfer and women’s roles in arts and leadership as well as their connections to their own mothers\, aunts\, and grandmothers. \nThe talk begins at 6 p.m. and a reception for participants will follow.
