By overlaying images of a setting sun that align vastly different and often non-neighboring locations\, Ghost of a Dream’s Aligned by the Sun (through the revolution) offers entry points to important conversations around equality\, location\, migration\, and the environment. DESCRIPTION:Join John Bowles\, associate professor of African American art in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Art and Art History and faculty affiliate of the Institute for African American Research\, as we walk through Modern Black Culture: The Art of Aaron Douglas. The exhibition features more than 40 paintings\, prints\, book and magazine illustrations\, drawings\, and other artworks\, and demonstrates how Douglas developed an immediately recognizable style of dynamic\, Art Deco-like forms and starkly silhouetted figures. He also advanced the idea that modern Black culture drew upon music\, dance\, visual art\, and faith traditions developed in Black communities throughout the world. \nThe tour is currently full; please email acklandrsvp@unc.edu to join the wait list. SUMMARY:Artist-Led Tour of “Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022”
DESCRIPTION:Join the 2022 Master of Fine Arts students for a special walk-through! This tour will be led by all five MFA candidates and introduced by exhibition curator Laura Ritchie. \nThrough the work of five artists\, Myth & Memory imagines a future in which the margins become the center. Drawing from personal narrative\, each of the artists engages a vocabulary of fantasy to make visible the stories that have been forgotten\, obscured\, or erased by white heteropatriarchal modes of dominance. Their work interrogates practices of history-making and history-keeping at the individual\, institutional\, and systemic level. Intimate gestures and acts of subversion reframe the lens through which memory is archived and myth is defined. As a result\, new stories emerge from a restructured past. \nPresented in connection with Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022. We’ll meet at the Ackland to see Modern Black Culture: The Art of Aaron Douglas then embark on our mural walk\, stopping at various murals on the way to see African American Trailblazers\, which is installed on the Walt’s Grill/Molly’s Gift Shop Building at 111 S. The talk is presented in connection with the Ackland Art Museum’s current exhibition Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks. \nFree and open to the public. The talk will be held in the Hanes Art Center Auditorium\, Room 121. \nAn endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students. The Hanes Visiting Artist series greatly enriches both our academic programs and our outreach to the wider community. All lectures are free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Paper Delights: The Peck Collection of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Drawings \nJoin us for a free public talk by distinguished professor Wayne Franits (Syracuse University)\, specialist in seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish Art. This lecture examines some of the highlights of the exhibition of the incomparable Peck Collection of Seventeenth-Century Dutch Drawings\, which is currently on view at the Ackland Art Museum. Wayne Franits is a well-known scholar of seventeenth-century Dutch art and an occasional drawings collector himself. He will shed further light on several of the drawings in the exhibition and briefly share his own recollections of Sheldon Peck. \nHosted by the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Art and Art History and MEMS\, UNC’s Medieval and Early Modern Studies Program \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Lecture-Demo with Artist Elizabeth Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unconventional artist talk with Boston-based multimedia artist Elizabeth Alexander. Alexander\, whose work Spit Cake (2014) is on view at the Ackland as part of the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership\, will talk about her work as she demonstrates the various techniques used to create her delicate cut-porcelain sculptures. Audience members will be able to see the stages of crafting sculptures from found porcelain dishware into evocative works that comment on the deterioration of domestic space.  \nFree tickets are required for this program\, as space is limited. See below! \nThis program is presented in connection with Houseguests: American Art from the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership and made possible thanks to a generous award from the Art Bridges Foundation. \nElizabeth Alexander is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculptures and installations made from deconstructed domestic materials. She holds degrees in sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy\, MFA\, and Massachusetts College of Art\, BFA. Her work has been exhibited across the country at institutions including the Museum of Art and Design\, the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, the North Carolina Museum of Art\, the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art\, the Nasher Museum at Duke University\, and the Currier Museum\, and is included in permanent collections at the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville\, AR\, Fidelity\, and the Mint Museum in Charlotte\, NC. She is currently an Associate Professor and Sculpture Department Coordinator at Montserrat College of Art.  \nIn addition to her sculpture Spit Cake on view at the Ackland through May 14\, local audience members can see Alexander’s work and you did not even know enough to be sorry on view at the North Carolina Museum of Art\, as well as in an upcoming exhibition at Cassilhaus in Chapel Hill.
