SUMMARY:Ackland Film Forum: Peter Strickland\, "In Fabric" (2018\, UK)
DESCRIPTION:Peter Strickland\, In Fabric (2018\, UK) \nAn homage to the Italian giallo horror films of the 1970s\, In Fabric is the story of a spectacular red dress\, and the fate of those who fall under its spell. Funny\, strange\, and\, at times\, genuinely scary\, In Fabric is the kind of film that will stick with you for days afterward. Directed by Peter Strickland\, the film will have you digging through your closet\, wondering if something in your wardrobe might also be haunted. \nPart of the Ackland Film Forum Fall 2022 series “Art and Artifice” co-organized by the UNC Film Studies Program and the Ackland Art Museum. \n— \nABOUT THE SERIES:  \nArt and Artifice \nIn movies we allow our imaginations to touch the realities of our world. The films that impact us most are often those that are not true\, but could be. Artists\, behind and in front of the camera\, give us license to dream and fear. In this series\, we explore films that engage and expand the idea of creativity. From sculptors to dressmakers\, performers to survivors\, these films all ask what it means to create art in the cinema. \nThe series is presented by the Ackland Art Museum and UNC Film Studies\, part of the Department of English and Comparative Literature\, in connection with Houseguests: American Art from the Art Bridges Collection Loan Partnership. \n7:30 p.m. at the Varsity Theatre\, 123 E. Franklin Street\, Chapel Hill \nTuesday\, August 30: Ang Lee\, Life of Pi (2012\, US) \nWednesday\, September 7: Andre DeToth\, House Of Wax (1953\, US) \nTuesday\, September 13: Blake Edwards\, Victor/Victoria (1982\, US) \nTuesday\, September 20: Charles Allen\, Sidewalk Stories (1989\, US) \nTuesday\, October 4: Peter Strickland\, In Fabric (2018\, UK)

SUMMARY:Away for the Day: Docent-Led NCMA Tour
DESCRIPTION:Docent-Led Tour of NCMA’s Reinstalled People’s Collection\nWednesday\, October 26 | 10:30 a.m. \nThis October\, the North Carolina Museum of Art will complete an ambitious reinstallation of its collection\, featuring the presentation of five new galleries\, exploring portraiture and power\, Egypt and Africa\, the Americas\, the art of conservation\, and a gallery connecting visual and performing arts. The Ackland has lent eleven works to the first year of this re-installation\, ranging from an ancient Nubian tulip beaker of around 1600 BCE and a 4th century BCE Greek coin to a Tiffany Lily Lamp and an iconic contemporary sculpture by Renee Stout. \nThe refreshed collection will include new interactive learning experiences\, including digital games and labels. The interactive station\, Beyond White: Marble Sculpture and Color\, will focus on the Roman Fragment of a Sarcophagus with Ram from the third century. Through research and conservation\, Museum staff learned this object had color when created thousands of years ago. Visitors will be able to explore these pigments and see a digital version of what the object would have looked like when new and colorful. There will be a map projection in The Africa We Ought to Know Gallery to encourage learning about the empires in Africa\, paired with voice narration\, to give a deeper understanding of the trade routes on the continent. A map in the Dutch collection will highlight the history of the 80 Years War. \nJoin us on October 26 to see this new space during a docent-led tour. \nPurchase tickets below!\n$10 Ackland Members | $12 Non-Members \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Away for the Day: Serritella Studio Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tour the Artist Studio of Eric Serritella in Chapel Hill\nThursday\, November 3 | 10:00 a.m. \nEric Serritella is a trompe l’oeil artist specializing in hand-carved ceramic sculptures transformed into birch\, charred and weathered logs. His one-of-a-kind sculptures are internationally recognized for their hyper-realism and have been exhibited\, awarded and collected on five continents for their exquisite organic design and incredibly lifelike textures. Influences include the historic Yixing teapots of the 1600s\, Japanese wabi sabi philosophy\, Asian calligraphy and paintings\, L. C. Tiffany glass windows\, and birch trees. \nSerritella’s primary applied art training came in the form of two artist residencies studying with Ah Leon and four clay masters in Taiwan in 2004 and 2006. Both were funded in part by New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) grants. \nTwo dozen works are included in public collections including among others The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Carnegie Museum of Art\, and the Mint Museum. Sculptures have been represented at some of the world’s top art and design fairs including Frieze NY\, TEFAF Maastricht\, Design Miami\, Art Basel\, The Salon: Art + Design (NY)\, Masterpiece London\, and SOFA Chicago. \nJoin us on November 3 to meet the artist and tour his studio. \nPurchase tickets below!\n$10 Ackland Members | $12 Non-Members \nQuestions?
