SUMMARY:Welcome Back to Campus: Reception for “Against Nature"
DESCRIPTION:The Ackland welcomes back faculty\, students\, and staff to campus with a celebration for its newest installation in the ART& space\, Phaan Howng: Against Nature.  \nIn Against Nature\, artist Phaan Howng positions an ornate botanical composition above wainscotting that suggests the architecture of a late nineteenth-century study or parlor. The paneling’s mint green tint evokes the green interior paints used in that period\, achieved through harmful additions of arsenic. Above the wainscotting\, painted vinyl banners depict a jungle of barely contained foliage with spikes and fronds of neon reds\, electric oranges\, cerulean blues\, and bruised purples. \nDuring the evening\, we will be celebrating with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Phaan will be present during the evening to mingle with attendees. Around 6:15 PM\, she will briefly introduce the artwork and answer any questions. \nJoin us for an evening honoring Phaan and welcoming the installation to our community\, as well as starting off the semester in a fun way! \nWe ask for folks to RSVP to give us a headcount for the event. No ticket purchase is required.

SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk: Acktoberfest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Ackland Art Museum’s fifth annual Acktoberfest — an evening filled with art\, crafts\, and local vendors! \nArt supplies will be available in our ART& space\, where visitors can create their own paper plants inspired by Phaan Howng: Against Nature. There will also be postcards inspired by the installation for visitors to enjoy and use. \nExplore our special exhibitions Care and Concern: Recent Acquisitions of Modern and Contemporary Art \, and Continental Shift: Recent Acquisitions of African Art throughout the evening with extended museum hours. \nLocal vendors will be on hand with goods to browse and purchase\, including Dingo Dog Brewing Company\, where visitors can grab a drink to sip while crafting. \nA full list of vendors will be published closer to the event date. \nAcktoberfest is a free\, walk-in program; no registration required to attend or craft. Museum galleries will be open from 5–9 p.m.; the vendors will be onsite from 6–8:30 p.m.
