DESCRIPTION:11:00 a.m. Social Hour\n12:00 p.m. Lunch\nWe are thrilled to announce that our Annual Luncheon guest speaker will Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg. Firstenberg ’83 (MBA) is the social practice artist who created In America: Remember\, an art installation of over 700\,000 white flags on the National Mall in September 2021 to honor the lives lost to Covid-19. Her art draws viewers in with its beautiful aesthetic\, then delivers a visceral message on themes ranging from political divide\, to homelessness\, to drug addiction. She is a proud Tar Heel\, having earned an MBA from Kenan-Flagler. She believes that art communicates when words fall on unlistening ears. \nEach ticket includes access to the pre-lunch social hour\, beer and wine\, and a three-course plated lunch. All proceeds benefit the Ackland’s public programs.

DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Printmaking Workshop with Raj Bunnag \n6-7:30 p.m.  \n \nJoin Raj Bunnag\, 2022 MFA candidate whose work is featured in Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022\, for a special hands-on printmaking workshop during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk!  \n  \nIn this drop-in workshop\, visitors will be able to make their own tiny stamps using hand-carved blocks made by Bunnag. Watch as Bunnag demonstrates his printmaking techniques and create your own small prints to take home. This workshop will take place outdoors and attendees are welcome to stay for as long as they like during the hour and a half-long program.   \n \nMaterials for this event have been generously donated by Speedball. Presented in connection with Myth & Memory: Selected Works by the MFA Class of 2022. Part of the Chapel-Hill Carrboro 2nd Friday ArtWalk. \n— \nRaj Bunnag is a Thai American artist living and working in Durham\, North Carolina. He received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2012 with an emphasis in Printmaking. He is currently an MFA candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bunnag’s practice examines systematic racism inherent to the foundations of the US\, its institutions\, and its domestic/global policies\, through themes in the lineage of print. In his more personal work\, he is researching the ideas and baggage that come with self-identity as the son of immigrants and what it means to be a non-white body existing in white spaces. He has shown work nationally and internationally as well as received numerous awards for his relief printed work.

SUMMARY:Art Adventures P.M. Session: Myth & Memory
DESCRIPTION:Join us as the Ackland resumes our popular Art Adventures class in person with instructor Allison Tierney! We will be inspired by Phượng Duyên Hải Nguyễn’s Nowhen (2022). \nArt Adventures sessions provide kids with a guided view of art in the Ackland’s galleries\, followed by the opportunity to create take-home treasures in an adjacent art studio using newly-learned art-making techniques. Materials are provided. \nThe Ackland Art Museum is operating under the guidelines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As of March 7\, 2022\, masks are optional in our galleries. \nClass sessions will be limited to 10 participants. To be added to a waitlist\, please email acklandRSVP@unc.edu \n—\nHear from artist Kiara Sanders about her new mural African American Trailblazers\, which was inspired by the work of Aaron Douglas. We’ll meet at the Ackland to see Modern Black Culture: The Art of Aaron Douglas then embark on our mural walk\, stopping at various murals on the way to see African American Trailblazers\, which is installed on the Walt’s Grill/Molly’s Gift Shop Building at 111 S. Merritt Mill Road. Throughout the event\, we’ll hear from Sanders about her artistic influences (including Aaron Douglas)\, the role of public art by Black artists in our community\, and how the Trailblazers mural came to be. \nSpace is limited. Please RSVP below.
