DESCRIPTION:Art and Art History Graduate Symposium \nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC \nCoordinated by the Art Student Graduate Organization and co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History\, Department of Classics\, Department of Romance Studies\, and The Graduate and Professional Student Federation. \nCommunity: Public\, Private\, Patron\, & Spectator \nJoin us for this day-long\, interdisciplinary exploration of the interrelations between community and art-making. In the Ackland Art Museum’s Art& space\, Graduate students from UNC and universities from across the US will present and discuss new research touching on ways in which material objects manifest collective values and shape perceptions of identity among disparate audiences. \nThrough a series of panel presentations\, discussions\, and a culminating keynote address\, gathered attendees and presenters will ask together: How do works of art create dialogues between and within communities? \nKeynote address by Dr. Peter Chametzky\, Professor of Art History in the School of Visual Art & Design at the University of South Carolina. \nPlease find the final program schedule here.\n \n\nRegistration is required\, but registrants need not be there for the whole day. SUMMARY:A Farewell to Step Right Up!
DESCRIPTION:A Farewell to Step Right Up!\nWednesday\, Sept 4 | 3:30-5 PM\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on the terrace as the Ackland says a fond farewell to Chapel Hill-based artist Patrick Dougherty’s Step Right Up stickwork sculptures. \nOn display since October 2017\, the large-scale piece—comprised of five individual stickwork sculptures—was constructed entirely of tree saplings. \nIn creating Step Right Up\, Dougherty was inspired by an ancient\, zoomorphic pouring vessel on view in the Ackland’s galleries. The tree saplings—primarily maple and gum—used to make the piece were responsibly harvested from Duke Forest and Triangle Land Conservancy\, organizations with which Patrick Dougherty has long relationships. \n\nFree and open to the public. \nPhoto by Emily Bowles.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Tai Chi in the Galleries\, inspired by the renowned Asian art collections at the Ackland! \nTai chi is an ancient Chinese movement practice known to reduce pain and improve your mental and physical balance and well-being. This class uses gentle Sun-style tai chi routines that are safe\, easy to learn\, and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. \nTai Chi in the Galleries takes place most Mondays from 1:10-2:00 PM and is taught by Joanne Marshall\, a certified yoga and Tai Chi for Health instructor.
