SUMMARY:Virtual Family & Friends Sunday: Year of the Ox
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year (celebrated on February 12\, 2021) with a storytime\, UNC-Chapel Hill’s very own Flying Silk dance troupe\, and a closer look at works on display at the Ackland! \nEach month\, the Ackland hosts a free program for families\, kids\, and the young at heart featuring hands-on art activities\, live performances\, tours\, and more virtually! \nAckland Storytime\nLIVE Storytime: Chinese Lunar New Year \n2:30 P.M. EST | Zoom \nJoin intern Katie Brandao on Zoom as we learn more about the Chinese Zodiac. Sign up here \nThe Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac\, \nauthored by Christopher Corr (Age Range: 3-6) \nYouTube: Flying Silk Dance Video\nYouTube \nWe welcome you to view a unique performance from UNC’s only classical Chinese dance group\, Flying Silk. The group participates in cultural showcases across the state with the aim of introducing and educating surrounding communities on the beauty of traditional Chinese dance culture. \nCollection Connections: \nDish\, Unidentified Chinese Artist\, 1426-1435 \nVase\, Thomas Bezanson\, 1959-69 \nThe ox harkens imagery of strength and steadfastness\, but it also lends its likeness to the richly colored red of the two glazed ceramics featured above. ‘Sang de bouef’ glaze\, or oxblood\, gained prevalence in the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is characterized by its monochrome red. The striking coloring of ‘sang de bouef’ is achieved using copper oxide\, whose chemical composition allows for the pottery to mimic the depth of its namesake animal’s blood. \nThe Ackland holds both an original dish from an unidentified Chinese artist of the 15th century  and a mid-20th century vase from Canadian artist Thomas Bezanson in its collection\, both of which utilize the sang de bouef glaze. \nTo learn more about the history of ‘sang de bouef\,’ we encourage you to explore these resources: \n‘Sang de Bouef’ Vase\, The Cleveland Museum of Art \nVase\, called “The Flame”\, National Gallery of Art \nMetal Ox Origami Activity\nD.I.Y. Origami Metal Ox Envelope and Bookmark \nEnvelope and Bookmark Instructions (PDF) \nTo celebrate the Year of the Metal Ox\, make an ox-inspired envelope or bookmark! Activity kits are available at the Front Desk from Wednesday\, February 24 to Saturday\, February 27 for pick-up. Kits are limited to first come\, first served. Step by step directions available above! \nWant to create more Metal Ox inspired art? SUMMARY:Ackland Film Forum: "Filibus" Watch Party and Panel
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, in collaboration with the Film Studies Programs in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill\, the Ackland Film Forum continues its all virtual series on Queer Cinema\, now expanding to a selection of four international films for a look at Global Queer Cinema. View the selected films on your own or join us for a watch party. Watch parties will be followed by a live post-film panel discussion with scholars from around the globe. \nThe first film in the Global Queer Cinema series will be Filibus (Mario Roncoroni\, 1915\, Italy). The film will be available to stream January 29-February 4\, 2021 with a watch party on Tuesday\, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a live panel discussion at 9 p.m. Register below to receive a link to stream the film and a link to attend the panel via Zoom on February 2. \nThis program is sponsored by UNC University Libraries. The series is supported in part by Laughing Gull Foundation. \nAbout Filibus \nDirected by Mario Roncoroni and scripted by future science fiction author Giovanni Bertinetti\, Filibus is the most exciting\, witty\, feminist\, steampunk\, cross-dressing aviatrix thriller you will ever see! Previously seen in a badly subtitled\, imperfect version\, Filibus was recently remastered by the Eye Filmmuseum\, restoring the film’s marvelous range of Desmet tinting and toning in the original nitrate material. To bring the film back to its flavor of the period — when the characters Fantomas and Arsène Lupin were worldwide sensations — Milestone hired young poet Austin Renna to write new intertitles based on an improved translation by Eye’s archivist Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi. To go with this fantastical film\, the famed Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra AND Donald Sosin have created two new stunning scores! –Milestone Films \n  \nTuesday\, February 2\, 2021\nFilibus Watch Parties | Tweet along with Ackland and UNC Film Studies using #AcklandFilmForum \n7:30 p.m. Watch Party \n9:00 p.m. Panel \nLink to the panel is provided with registration. Streaming links will be sent at a later date. Registration is open!

SUMMARY:Ackland Film Forum: "But I'm a Cheerleader" Watch Party and Panel
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, in collaboration with the Film Studies Programs in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill\, the Ackland Film Forum presents an all virtual series on Queer Cinema. View the selected films on your own or join us for a watch party with the panelists. Watch parties will be followed by a live post-film panel discussion. \nThe third film in our Queer Cinema series will be But I’m a Cheerleader (Jamie Babbitt\, 1999\, 92 minutes). This whimsically edgy comedy follows teenager Megan (Natasha Lyonne)\, whose suburban existence filled with friends\, cheerleading\, and all-American fun is upended when her straight-laced parents suspect she may be a lesbian. In a panic\, they send her to True Directions\, a “rehabilitation” camp run by the strict and prudish Mary (Cathy Moriarty)\, to mount an intervention led by counselor Mike (RuPaul Charles). Megan dutifully follows the program — until she develops feelings for another camper in this timeless\, satirical romantic-comedy about self-acceptance and love\, costarring Michelle Williams\, Clea DuVall\, and Julie Delpy. (Lionsgate Entertainment) \nRegister Here!\n7:30 p.m.\nBut I’m a Cheerleader along with us and share your thoughts and questions for the panelist on Twitter. #AcklandFilmForum \n9 p.m.\nFollowing the watch party\, join Jacob Lau (Women’s and Gender Studies\, UNC-Chapel Hill)\, Michelle Robinson (American Studies\, UNC-Chapel Hill) and Martin Louis Johnson (English and Comparative Literature\, UNC-Chapel Hill) for a virtual post-film discussion. \nLinks to both the streaming film and panel are provided with registration. Please note that you will be able to stream the film from December 11th to December 17th. Viewers will need to enter their phone number for 2-factor verification on Lionsgate’s streaming site. \nBut I’m a Cheerleader courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment. SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art 2020: TRANSMISSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Ackland Art Museum is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2020 by presenting TRANSMISSIONS\, a program of six new videos considering the impact of HIV and AIDS beyond the United States. The video program brings together artists working across the world: Jorge Bordello (Mexico)\, Gevi Dimitrakopoulou (Greece)\, Las Indetectables (Chile)\, George Stanley Nsamba (Uganda)\, Lucía Egaña Rojas (Chile/Spain)\, and Charan Singh (India/UK). \nThe program does not intend to give a comprehensive account of the global AIDS epidemic\, but provides a platform for a diversity of voices from beyond the United States\, offering insight into the divergent and overlapping experiences of people living with HIV around the world today. The six commissioned videos cover a broad range of subjects\, such as the erasure of women living with HIV in South America\, ineffective Western public health campaigns in India\, and the realities of stigma and disclosure for young people in Uganda. \nAs the world continues to adapt to living with a new virus\, COVID-19\, these videos offer an opportunity to reflect on the resonances and differences between the two epidemics and their uneven distribution across geography\, race\, and gender. \nTRANSMISSIONS will premiere on November 30 at 6 p.m. EST as part of a special online screening event hosted by Visual AIDS and supported by Ackland Art Museum. A live Q&A with the commissioned artists will follow the screening. Please RSVP here to receive updates about this event. \nBeginning December 1\, the video program will be available to view online at visualaids.org/transmissions. \nVisual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over.

SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay
DESCRIPTION:This event has now passed. Watch a recording of the talk below! \nJoin us for a conversation between artist Shanequa Gay and Lauren Turner\, the Ackland’s assistant curator for the collection. They will discuss Gay’s commissioned installation holding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor\, which is now on view in the Ackland’s ART& gallery. \nholding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor is a site-specific installation that features monumental chimeric figures rendered in oil and acrylic. Gay merges Breonna Taylor’s likeness with deer and zebra features in a technique of juxtaposition that she employs throughout her artmaking practice. The resulting hybrid guardians incorporate multiple characteristics of the natural world to facilitate healing and empowerment. An altar-like display of vintage Tiara black glassware and salt water transforms the gallery into a space for collective mourning while the monochromatic installation starkly reminds viewers that Taylor’s death resulted from forces that shape the lives of countless Black Americans. \nShanequa Gay\, an Atlanta native\, has exhibited at the Zuckerman Museum (Kennesaw\, GA)\, the Hammonds House Museum (Atlanta\, GA)\, the Hayti Heritage Center (Durham\, NC)\, the McColl Center for Art + Innovation (Charlotte\, NC)\, and the Chattanooga African American Museum (Chattanooga\, TN). For more information about her work\, please go to www.shanequagay.com. \nThis installation and related programming have been made possible by the generous support of James Keith Brown and Eric Diefenbach.\n\nRecording of our “Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay” held Friday\, Nov 13\, 2020. Also available on the Ackland’s YouTube channel.
