The NEA Big Read at the Ackland has been organized in partnership with the Chapel Hill Public Library and Carolina Public Humanities at UNC-Chapel Hill. \nThe programming will kick off with a free conversational program with the author Stephanie Burt in conversation with Jacob Lau (Women’s and Gender Studies\, UNC-Chapel Hill) on Wednesday\, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. Following the kick-off event\, the Ackland and its partners will host six book discussions of Burt’s Advice from the Lights with discussion facilitators from our community and three Drag Storytimes featuring local performers. SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay
DESCRIPTION:This event has now passed. Watch a recording of the talk below! \nJoin us for a conversation between artist Shanequa Gay and Lauren Turner\, the Ackland’s assistant curator for the collection. They will discuss Gay’s commissioned installation holding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor\, which is now on view in the Ackland’s ART& gallery. \nholding space for nobility: a memorial for Breonna Taylor is a site-specific installation that features monumental chimeric figures rendered in oil and acrylic. Gay merges Breonna Taylor’s likeness with deer and zebra features in a technique of juxtaposition that she employs throughout her artmaking practice. The resulting hybrid guardians incorporate multiple characteristics of the natural world to facilitate healing and empowerment. An altar-like display of vintage Tiara black glassware and salt water transforms the gallery into a space for collective mourning while the monochromatic installation starkly reminds viewers that Taylor’s death resulted from forces that shape the lives of countless Black Americans. \nShanequa Gay\, an Atlanta native\, has exhibited at the Zuckerman Museum (Kennesaw\, GA)\, the Hammonds House Museum (Atlanta\, GA)\, the Hayti Heritage Center (Durham\, NC)\, the McColl Center for Art + Innovation (Charlotte\, NC)\, and the Chattanooga African American Museum (Chattanooga\, TN). For more information about her work\, please go to www.shanequagay.com. \nThis installation and related programming have been made possible by the generous support of James Keith Brown and Eric Diefenbach.\n\nRecording of our “Artist Conversation with Shanequa Gay” held Friday\, Nov 13\, 2020. Also available on the Ackland’s YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art 2020: TRANSMISSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Ackland Art Museum is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2020 by presenting TRANSMISSIONS\, a program of six new videos considering the impact of HIV and AIDS beyond the United States. The video program brings together artists working across the world: Jorge Bordello (Mexico)\, Gevi Dimitrakopoulou (Greece)\, Las Indetectables (Chile)\, George Stanley Nsamba (Uganda)\, Lucía Egaña Rojas (Chile/Spain)\, and Charan Singh (India/UK). \nThe program does not intend to give a comprehensive account of the global AIDS epidemic\, but provides a platform for a diversity of voices from beyond the United States\, offering insight into the divergent and overlapping experiences of people living with HIV around the world today. The six commissioned videos cover a broad range of subjects\, such as the erasure of women living with HIV in South America\, ineffective Western public health campaigns in India\, and the realities of stigma and disclosure for young people in Uganda. \nAs the world continues to adapt to living with a new virus\, COVID-19\, these videos offer an opportunity to reflect on the resonances and differences between the two epidemics and their uneven distribution across geography\, race\, and gender. \nTRANSMISSIONS will premiere on November 30 at 6 p.m. EST as part of a special online screening event hosted by Visual AIDS and supported by Ackland Art Museum. A live Q&A with the commissioned artists will follow the screening. Please RSVP here to receive updates about this event. \nBeginning December 1\, the video program will be available to view online at visualaids.org/transmissions. \nVisual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over.
