SUMMARY:Ackland Film Forum: "Filibus" Watch Party and Panel
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, in collaboration with the Film Studies Programs in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill\, the Ackland Film Forum continues its all virtual series on Queer Cinema\, now expanding to a selection of four international films for a look at Global Queer Cinema. View the selected films on your own or join us for a watch party. Watch parties will be followed by a live post-film panel discussion with scholars from around the globe. \nThe first film in the Global Queer Cinema series will be Filibus (Mario Roncoroni\, 1915\, Italy). The film will be available to stream January 29-February 4\, 2021 with a watch party on Tuesday\, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a live panel discussion at 9 p.m. Register below to receive a link to stream the film and a link to attend the panel via Zoom on February 2. \nThis program is sponsored by UNC University Libraries. The series is supported in part by Laughing Gull Foundation. \nAbout Filibus \nDirected by Mario Roncoroni and scripted by future science fiction author Giovanni Bertinetti\, Filibus is the most exciting\, witty\, feminist\, steampunk\, cross-dressing aviatrix thriller you will ever see! Previously seen in a badly subtitled\, imperfect version\, Filibus was recently remastered by the Eye Filmmuseum\, restoring the film’s marvelous range of Desmet tinting and toning in the original nitrate material. To bring the film back to its flavor of the period — when the characters Fantomas and Arsène Lupin were worldwide sensations — Milestone hired young poet Austin Renna to write new intertitles based on an improved translation by Eye’s archivist Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi. To go with this fantastical film\, the famed Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra AND Donald Sosin have created two new stunning scores! –Milestone Films \n  \nTuesday\, February 2\, 2021\nFilibus Watch Parties | Tweet along with Ackland and UNC Film Studies using #AcklandFilmForum \n7:30 p.m. Watch Party \n9:00 p.m. Panel \nLink to the panel is provided with registration. Streaming links will be sent at a later date. Registration is open!

SUMMARY:Virtual Family & Friends Sunday: Year of the Ox
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year (celebrated on February 12\, 2021) with a storytime\, UNC-Chapel Hill’s very own Flying Silk dance troupe\, and a closer look at works on display at the Ackland! \nEach month\, the Ackland hosts a free program for families\, kids\, and the young at heart featuring hands-on art activities\, live performances\, tours\, and more virtually! \nAckland Storytime\nLIVE Storytime: Chinese Lunar New Year \n2:30 P.M. EST | Zoom \nJoin intern Katie Brandao on Zoom as we learn more about the Chinese Zodiac. Sign up here \nThe Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac\, \nauthored by Christopher Corr (Age Range: 3-6) \nYouTube: Flying Silk Dance Video\nYouTube \nWe welcome you to view a unique performance from UNC’s only classical Chinese dance group\, Flying Silk. The group participates in cultural showcases across the state with the aim of introducing and educating surrounding communities on the beauty of traditional Chinese dance culture. \nCollection Connections: \nDish\, Unidentified Chinese Artist\, 1426-1435 \nVase\, Thomas Bezanson\, 1959-69 \nThe ox harkens imagery of strength and steadfastness\, but it also lends its likeness to the richly colored red of the two glazed ceramics featured above. ‘Sang de bouef’ glaze\, or oxblood\, gained prevalence in the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is characterized by its monochrome red. The striking coloring of ‘sang de bouef’ is achieved using copper oxide\, whose chemical composition allows for the pottery to mimic the depth of its namesake animal’s blood. \nThe Ackland holds both an original dish from an unidentified Chinese artist of the 15th century  and a mid-20th century vase from Canadian artist Thomas Bezanson in its collection\, both of which utilize the sang de bouef glaze. \nTo learn more about the history of ‘sang de bouef\,’ we encourage you to explore these resources: \n‘Sang de Bouef’ Vase\, The Cleveland Museum of Art \nVase\, called “The Flame”\, National Gallery of Art \nMetal Ox Origami Activity\nD.I.Y. Origami Metal Ox Envelope and Bookmark \nEnvelope and Bookmark Instructions (PDF) \nTo celebrate the Year of the Metal Ox\, make an ox-inspired envelope or bookmark! Activity kits are available at the Front Desk from Wednesday\, February 24 to Saturday\, February 27 for pick-up. Kits are limited to first come\, first served. Step by step directions available above! \nWant to create more Metal Ox inspired art?
