DESCRIPTION:During the 2nd Friday ArtWalk\, join us for a pop-up exhibition of artists’ books by Black artists\, illustrators\, and photographers from the Sloane Art Library collection\, part of UNC Libraries. Chat with art librarians and see works up close from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. \nPresented in connection with the Ackland’s current exhibition Modern Black Culture: The Art of Aaron Douglas\, which features several examples of book and magazine illustrations by Harlem Renaissance modernist artist Aaron Douglas. The Museum galleries will remain open until 9 p.m. tonight! \n*NEW* \nStarting this month\, enjoy Twilights on the Terrace during the Ackland’s summer 2nd Friday evening hours\, featuring a pop-up bar by Craftboro Brewing! Craft beer\, sparkling lemon- and limeade\, and snacks will be available for purchase from 5-8 p.m. Relax outside on our Terrace while you explore the new playful outdoor installation pARC by The Urban Conga.

DESCRIPTION:This program invites 10- to 13-year-olds to look at selected works in the Ackland’s galleries and identify techniques that the artists used to make them. \nGallery teachers demonstrate and teach participants technical skills\, which they can then apply to their own artistic creations. A mix of drawing from works on display and creating one’s own original works is offered in each session. Materials are provided. \nClass sessions will be limited to 10 participants. \nThe Ackland Art Museum is operating under the guidelines of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Books are appropriate for ages 5 and up. \nMural & Graffiti Wall | All Afternoon in the Ackland courtyard \nMake your mark on our temporary mural wall with spray paint and inspiration from the art on view at the Ackland. Hosted by Chapel Hill Arts and Culture \nFree Family Activity Kits | Available in the Ackland Lobby beginning May 18\nPick up a kit to use in the galleries or at home to make your own “mural sketch” using stencils and textured paper\, inspired by Aaron Douglas’s vibrant Harriet Tubman mural. \nSelf-Guided Art Walk to Chapel Hill-Carrboro Juneteenth Celebration at Hargraves Community Center\nExplore Chapel Hill’s vibrant public art on a self-guided art walk between the Ackland and Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Hargraves Community Center from 2-6 p.m. on June 19.
